PURPOSE: To improve electromagnetic conversion characteristics and traveling property and to reduce sliding noise by specifying the surface roughness of the magnetic layer and the particle size of carbon black to be incorporated in the magnetic layer.
CONSTITUTION: The magnetic recording medium consists of a magnetic layer containing carbon black formed on a supporting body. The surface roughness of the magnetic layer R 10 Z is ≤30nm and the average particle size of carbon black is 30 - 50nm. R 10 Z is obtained by the following method from the longitudinal cross section including the width center of the medium with ±2mm allowance. Among horizontal lines which cross the upper surface profile of the magnetic layer, two horizontal lines are selected, one crosses the projection summit of the tenth height and the other crosses the bottom of valley of the tenth depth. R 10 Z is the distance between these two lines. Thereby, electromagnetic conversion characteristics and traveling property can be significantly improved in good balance and the sliding noise can be effectively reduced.
